Nail biting is a common occurrence to people and not many know the side effects it has. Here are a few dangerous things that can be associated with nail biting.
Nails can be the perfect location for bacteria, which also includes potentially pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli. There are chances of these bacteria getting into your body when you bite your nails. It should be noted that the fingernails can be twice as dirty as the fingers.
However, there is also an argument that people who bite their nails have stronger immune system as nail biting may help introduce pathogens from environment to the immune system and therefore helping it to learn and build defences.
Nail biters are prone to paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around nails. The bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms can enter through tiny tears when you chew your nails, which might lead to swelling, redness and pus formation. The painful condition might force you to have surgery.
Warts due to HPV infections
Warts caused by human papillomavirus, or HPV, are common among chronic nail biters. The warts can easily spread to the mouth and lips as you continue biting your nails.
Nail biting can hamper proper dental occlusion. The teeth might move out of position, go out of shape, wear down prematurely and eventually get weakened.
Impaired quality of life
According to a report, chronic nail biters have significantly higher quality of life impairment. The level of impairment goes up with the time spent on nail biting. Tension when trying to resist nail biting, suffering due to nail biting can also have a negative effect.
